Varshavsky Mark Markovich

1848-1907
Варшавський

Mark Markovich Varshavsky (Yiddish. מאַרק וואַרשאַווסקי; b. November 26, 1848, Odesa, Kherson Gubernia, Russian Empire - d. November 26, 1907, Kyiv, Russian Empire) was a Jewish poet and composer, author and performer of Yiddish songs.
He graduated from the Law Faculty of Kyiv University and worked as a jury attorney in Kyiv. In his free time, he wrote and performed Yiddish songs, accompanying himself on the piano. For a long time Mark Warshawsky did not record his songs, convinced of their low artistic value, but on the advice of Sholem Aleichem he decided to publish a collection of 25 songs with sheet music, which was published in 1901 with a foreword by Sholem Aleichem and was a great success among readers. Subsequently, Warshawsky's collection Yiddish Folklore ("Jewish Folk Songs") was reprinted several times in expanded form.

The song "Tears of a Miller" performed by Sidor Bilarsky is featured in the Coen brothers' film A Serious Man. His song "Afn prypechok" ("On the stove") is widely known. In particular, Steven Spielberg used it in the movie Schindler's List (1993).
