Polsky Ilya Samailovich

1924-2001

Ilya Polsky (August 18, 1924, Zvenyhorodka - August 16, 2001, Kharkiv) was a Ukrainian composer, candidate of art history, professor.

He was born on August 18, 1924 in the town of Zvenyhorodka. He received a PhD in art history, his dissertation was "Carol Cycles in Ukraine and Belarus".

He participated in the German-Soviet war. In 1949, he graduated from the Kharkiv Conservatory, where he studied composition with Dmytro Klebanov and music theory with Mykhailo Tits.

In 1947-1962 he taught at the Kharkiv Music College. Since 1962 he has been teaching, and since 1969 he has been the head of the department at the Kharkiv Institute of Culture.

He is the author of works on musical folklore, in particular in the collections Problems of Folklore of the Peoples of the USSR and Ukrainian Musicology.

His daughter, Iryna Polska, is a professor and Doctor of Arts.
