Ukrainian composer. Honored Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1958). People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1973).
Biography.
Graduated from the Kyiv Conservatory: In 1937 - piano class (under Kostiantyn Mykhailov), in 1941 - composition class (under Lev Revutskyi).
In September 1941, he was taken prisoner, but later escaped.
In 1942-1943 he worked as a pianist and conductor of the Poltava Music and Drama Theater.
In 1943-1944 he worked at the Kamianets-Podilskyi Music and Drama Theater.
At the same time, he was a liaison officer of the Bozhenko partisan detachment.
From March 1944, he continued his service in the Red Army, where he was the artistic director of the song and dance ensemble.
In 1951-1958, he taught at the Kyiv Conservatory.
Family.
His wife Violetta Bagmet is a singer (soprano). In 1942-1943, she was a soloist at the Poltava, and in 1943-1944, the Kamianets-Podilskyi Music and Drama Theaters. After the war, she was a librettist for her husband's operas.
His memory
The Radyvyliv Children's Art School in Rivne region was named after Herman Zhukovskyi. The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, and the Institute of Education Problems of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine regularly hold All-Ukrainian competitions for young performers named after Herman Zhukovskyi.
