Zagorsky Vasily Georgievich

1926-2003

Vasyl Georgievich Zagorsky (Moldovan: Vasile Zagorschi Vasile Zagorschi; February 27, 1926, Kara-Mahmed, Izmail County, Bessarabia, Romania - October 1, 2003) was a Ukrainian and Moldovan composer, teacher and pianist, 1956 - member of the Composers' Union of the Moldavian SSR, since 1964 - its chairman, 1968 - secretary of the Union's board.

Biography.
In 1941-1944, he studied at the Chisinau Lyceum, and until 1945 - at the gymnasium,

In 1952, he graduated from the Chisinau Conservatory, class of L. S. Gurov.

In 1947-1951, he worked as a teacher of theoretical subjects at the Ten-Year Music School, and in 1951-1953, he was a teacher and deputy director for scientific and educational work at the Chisinau Music School.

1957-1959 - Deputy Director for Scientific and Educational Work of the Chisinau Conservatory.

In 1959-1962, he was the director of the Moldavian Opera and Ballet Theater.

In 1960, he was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Moldavian SSR.

In 1968, he was awarded the State Prize of the Moldavian SSR "for the Rhapsody for Violin, Two Pianos and a Group of Percussion Instruments".

In 1970, he was promoted to associate professor.

In 1978-1990, he was a member of the Executive Board of the UNESCO International Music Consilium.

1982 - People's Artist of the Moldavian SSR.

His works include ballet, cantatas, instrumental pieces, romances, symphonies, and film scores:

1955 - "Moldavian Tunes" - together with Shiko Aranov,
1964 - "In an attempt to escape",
1967 - "Marianna",
1970 - "Risk",
1973 - "Bridges",
1978 - "Secret Service Agent",
1982 - "This is a man's job",
1982 - Swans on the Pond,
1985 - three-part series "Life and Immortality of Sergei Lazo".
He was a member of the Supreme Soviet of the Moldavian SSR of the 8th convocation.

In 1997, he was awarded the Order of the Republic.
