Yurina Lyudmila Egorovna

1962

Liudmyla Yurina (b. 16 January 1962, Uzyn) is a Ukrainian composer, member of the National Union of Composers of Ukraine, the New Music Association (Ukrainian section of the International Society for Contemporary Music/ISCM).
She graduated from the R. M. Glier Kyiv Music College with a degree in piano (1981), the P. I. Tchaikovsky Kyiv State Conservatory with a degree in composition (1990), and completed an assistantship with Professor E. F. Stankovych (1998). She attended master courses of Western European composers and performers - P.-G. Dittrich, G. Stebler, J. Durand, G. Zapf, I. Arditti (Rheinsberg, Germany) and H. Lachenmann and W. Rim (Dresden, Germany). In 2011, she was a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University (USA), Centre for Computational Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA https://ccrma.stanford.edu).

In 1990-1992, she headed the music department of the Kolo and Ars studio theatres in Kyiv. Since 1993 she has been a member of the Organising Committee and project coordinator of the International Forum of Young Composers (Kyiv, Ukraine). In 1997, she was the artistic director of the Meta-Art Festival of Contemporary Ukrainian Art (Kyiv, Ukraine). Since 1995, she has been teaching at the Department of Composition at the National Music Academy of Ukraine (composition, orchestration, author's course on contemporary music). In 1999, she was a composer-in-residence at the flute master course at the Rheinsberg Academy of Music (Germany). She has been a guest lecturer at the Rheinsberg Academy of Music (1999), Stuttgart University of Music (Germany, 2006), Texas Christian University (USA, 2008, 2011, 2012) and the City University of New York Graduate Centre (2020).

Co-founder and artistic director of the Ukrainian Music Festivals in America in 2008, 2012 (Texas, Fort Worth) and the Ukrainian Contemporary Music Festival aka UCMF in 2020 (New York).

She has received creative scholarships:

for a residency in Schrayan (Schrayan, Germany, 1998);
for a residency at the Experimental Electronic Studio of Southeastern Radio Germany from the Heinrich Strobel Foundation (Freiburg, 1999);
from the Ministry of Science and Arts of Baden-Württemberg (Baden-Baden, Germany, 2001);
for a residency at the VICC International Composers' Centre in Viseby (Gothenburg, Sweden, 2005, 2006);
a grant from the Fulbright Foundation (USA, 2010).
She has participated in many Ukrainian and international projects and festivals (including "New Music for Harpsichord" in Germany, "Ukrainian Music for String Quartets" in Italy, the international conference TripleCCRMAlite:40,50,80 at Stanford University, USA, etc.); her works have been performed in Ukraine, USA, Canada, Germany, Italy, France, Israel, Moldova, Mongolia, Poland, Finland, etc. She actively collaborates with well-known German performers, including the Dresden Sinfonietta, Ensemble XelmYa, Ensemble Timbre Actuel, etc. Her works have been performed by MAVerick ensemble, Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra, Trio Ravus, Karen Bentley Polick, Edo Frankel, Laura Ospina (USA), Borealis Brass (Canada), Pierre-Stephane Meuge (France), Ivo Nilsson (Sweden), Werner Baro, Dirk Amrhein (Germany), The Orchestra of the Ukrainian Broadcasting Company and Television, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, the Kyiv Camerata, the new music ensembles Ricochet and Sed Contra, the percussion ensemble ARS NOVA, the TanzLaboratorium Dance Company and others.

Recordings of her music have been released on the CDs "Two Days and Two Nights of New Music: Festivals 1998-2000", "Roman Holidays" by the Borealis Brass ensemble, and were broadcast on Deutsche Welle radio (Germany), British Broadcasting (GB), Canadian Radio and the Ukrainian National Television and Radio Company. He has published a number of works in the publishing houses "Musical Ukraine", "Frederick Harris Publishing Music" (Canada), TEM Taukay Edizioni Musicali (Italy), "Furore Verlag", "Certosa-Verlag" (Germany), "Terem-Music-Verlag" (Switzerland) and "Donemus" (Netherlands).
