Venceslav Venceslavovych Jedlicka (Czech: Jedlička; 29 September 1817, Kukleny - 19 November 1880, Poltava) was a Ukrainian pianist, music teacher and public figure of Czech origin. He was the brother of the musician Alois Jedlicka.
Biography.
He was born on 17 [29] September 1817 in the town of Kukleny (now part of Hradec Králové, Czech Republic). In 1839-1841 he studied at the Higher Technical School in Prague, then at the Prague Conservatory.
From 1844 he lived in Poltava, where he gave concerts. He worked as a music teacher in the estates of Poltava landowners. Mykhailo Starytskyi was among his students. He was acquainted with Taras Shevchenko, whom he met in 1845 in the village of Veselii Podil in Poltava region.
From 1848 to 1879, he taught at the Poltava Institute of Noble Maidens. He wrote musical works, including a string quartet based on the opera The Prophet by Giacomo Meyerbeer. Together with his brother, he organised a Czech-Polish choir in Poltava, whose repertoire also included Russian and Ukrainian songs arranged by Alois Jedlicka. He died in Poltava on 7 [19] November 1880.
