Pyotr Turchaninov (* 1 December 1779, St Petersburg - †1856) was a church composer.
Turchaninov was born in St. Petersburg, from 1787 he lived in Kyiv and Kharkiv, from 1794 to 1801 he was a pupil of A. Vedel. From August 1801 he was the conductor of the church choir in Sevsk (from 1803 he was ordained), in 1809 he was the conductor of choirs at various churches in St. Petersburg, and in 1827 he was a teacher of singing at the court chapel for 41 years. Under the influence of Vedel and Ukrainian music, Turchaninov harmonised ancient church melodies, chants, and chanting, introducing old Kyivan semiotics.
Turchaninov was the author of church works (complete collection, 5 vols., ed. A. Kastalsky, M. 1905-06). His autobiography ("Archpriest Peter Ivanovich Turchaninov", P. 1863) is a valuable source for the biography of A. Vedel. Vedel's biography.
