Tsyura Evgeny Vasilyevich

1915-2001

Tsiura Yevhen Vasylovych was a bandura player. He was born on 25 December 1915 in the village of Radomyshl, Volyn. According to the Julian calendar, he was born on 27 December 1915 or 9 January 1916 according to the Gregorian calendar, in the village of Berezivka, Radomyshl district, now Sadove, Korystyshiv district (source: State Archives of Zhytomyr Oblast, fond 1, description 77, case 1730, folio 1 overleaf). He graduated from Kyiv Polytechnic. He worked as a geologist and developed topography for railway lines. After his military service, he entered the Kyiv Conservatory where he studied conducting and singing (with Olena Muraviova). There he learned to play the bandura and later joined the bandura ensemble at the state radio in 1935.

He was a member of the Bandura Choir at the State Radio from 1935. He studied bandura playing with M. Opryshka. In 1942, he became a member of the Taras Shevchenko Ukrainian Bandura Choir, and later a choirmaster. Later, he became the deputy conductor and in 1984 the artistic director. He directed the teenage bandura band in Winsor, Canada, and released 2 discs. He worked as a church conductor in Winsor from 1966 to 1996.

He died on 13 March 2001.
