Tsys Roman Vasylovych

1957

Roman Vasylovych Tsys (born 17 October 1957, Zhovkva, Lviv region) is a Lviv composer. Member of the National Union of Composers of Ukraine.
He was born on 17 October 1957 in Zhovkva, Lviv region.

He graduated from the Drohobych Music College, Mykola Lysenko Lviv Conservatory, composition class of Professor L. Mazepa.

He is the leader of the band Roman Tsys and Travelling Musicians from Lviv.

He worked as a teacher at the Dudaryk Choral School in Lviv and the Zhovkva School of Arts.

He is the author of symphonic, vocal-symphonic, chamber, choral, instrumental, vocal works, as well as a collection of songs "Autumn Violin", which includes songs and romances based on poems by Ukrainian poets.

He is the author of a chapter in the book "Choral Singing Textbook".

Author of the collection "Ukraine - My Flower" (2007).

Author of the collection "Piano works by Roman Tsys" (2014).

Author of the collection "Works for Violin, Viola and Piano" (2017).

Laureate of the Mykola Leontovych Competition (2013).

Winner of the Stanislav Liudkevych Prize (2018).

Roman Tsys's creative work is characterised by attention to folklore sources, in particular to the melodic and intonational richness of the Carpathian region. He is a typical representative of the Ukrainian school of composing. His compositions are characterised by romantic inspiration, melodic generosity, a keen sense of folk intonation, the use of folk elements, quality of texture, integrity and completeness of form. His creative work covers a variety of genres. He is the author of such large-scale musical forms as the cantata Subotiv based on Taras Shevchenko's poems for choir and symphony orchestra, the cantata Great Harmony based on Bohdan Antonych's poems for choir and symphony orchestra, the cantata Chyhyryne based on Taras Shevchenko's poems for choir and reader. Shevchenko for choir and reader, symphony "The Rising Hawk", suite "Himalayas" for piano and symphony orchestra, concerto for viola and orchestra, sonata for violin and piano, suite "Patryzanska" for string quartet, "Christmas Diptych" for mixed choir, "Rhapsody" for violin and orchestra.

Roman Tsys is the author of numerous small-scale works - choruses, romances, arrangements of Ukrainian folk songs, children's songs, pop songs, and instrumental miniatures.

A special place in Roman Tsys's oeuvre is occupied by works for children. These are pieces for piano, violin, viola, and choral works. For many years, the composer has been collaborating with the Dudaryk Choir and the Galician Chamber Choir. In particular, the Dudaryk performed the cantatas Subotiv, Great Harmony, and Chyhyryne, as well as many unaccompanied songs and choral works.

"The Galician Chamber Choir performed the choral suite Malanka, the Christmas Diptych, the Chyhyryne cantata, and many other works.

Roman Tsys's choral works have been successfully performed at choral festivals and at the Kyiv Music Fest international festival.
