Ukrainian composer and music public figure, Honored Artist of Ukraine, People's Artist of Ukraine, Honored Artist of the Russian Federation, professor, chairman of the Union of Composers of Ukraine in 1992-2005.
Biography.
He was born in Semipalatinsk (Kazakhstan) on June 6, 1942. He graduated from the piano (1966) and composition (1971) faculties of the Kyiv Conservatory. From 1967 until the last year of his life, he taught at the Kyiv Conservatory, and since 1973 he has been a member of the Union of Composers of Ukraine. From 1991 to 1993, he was a co-chairman (together with T. Khrennikov) of the Union of Composers of the USSR. From 1992 to 2005 he headed the National Union of Composers of Ukraine (Chairman of the Board and First Secretary of the Union). In 1997 he headed the jury of the piano nomination of the Mykola Lysenko International Competition.
He is the author of symphonic, chamber-instrumental, choral works, romances, songs, and music for theatrical performances. He has recorded more than 30 works for piano by Ukrainian composers. He is engaged in research work in the field of the history of Ukrainian music, in particular, he has restored and prepared for publication sonatas for violin and cembalo by M. Berezovsky. As a pianist, he has performed in Russia, the USA, Canada, Japan, Finland, and Armenia. He has recorded several gramophone records and CDs. He has been a jury member of many international competitions.

Son of choreographer Borys Stepanenko and actress of the Kyiv Franko Theater Yangel Maria (Muse) Savelievna (1909-1983).
