Yaroslav Smerechansky (1909, Kolomyia - 2002, Zalishchyky) was a composer, conductor, musician, and teacher.
Biography.
Yaroslav was born in 1909 in Kolomyia.
Since childhood, he was fond of music and songs. He further improved his violin playing at the Zalishchyky Teachers' Seminary. He often communicated with the prominent writer O. Makovei.
In 1932, Yaroslav Smerechanskyi graduated from the Lviv Conservatory.
Since 1943, he has been working in Zalishchyky. The choirs he organised won prizes at choir competitions in Kyiv. The choir of the village of Dobrovliany, under his direction, became known throughout Ukraine.
In 1959, he began to direct the men's chapel "Homin".
Y. Smerechansky was the author of musical compositions for choirs, ensembles, brass bands, and violin.
He composed music to poems by Taras Shevchenko, Mykhailo Shashkevych, Ivan Franko, Mykhailo Rylsky, and A. Malyshko.
Songs by Y. Smerechansky are performed by various professional and amateur choirs. His works have become the object of research by musicologists. He was an experienced teacher.
In 1947, he organised a children's music school and was its first director.
Y. Smerechansky died in 2002 in the town of Zalishchyky.
