Ukrainian musician and public figure, pianist, teacher, and conductor.
He studied in St. Petersburg (graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1869) and Berlin. In 1871 he performed as a conductor in Vienna, Prague, and Dresden.
In 1871 he founded a branch of the Imperial Russian Musical Society (IRMS) in Kharkiv, and on October 1 of the same year he opened music classes there. During 1882-1883, the professional base of the school was formed, which preceded the birth of the Kharkiv Music School, whose director I. Slatin was unanimously elected and held this position for 49 years (1883-1921).
In 1887, the St. Petersburg branch of the Russian Musical Society elected him an honorary member.
In 1917, he founded the Kharkiv Conservatory on the basis of the Kharkiv Music School and was its director (until 1921).
In 1919, the Kharkiv Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra was organized on the basis of the symphony orchestra he created.
M. Ippolitov-Ivanov, Anton and Rubinstein, S. Taneyev, and P. Tchaikovsky (he was in friendship and correspondence with P. Tchaikovsky) performed with it.
