Volodymyr Fedorovych Shynkaruk (19 August 1954, Vchorayshe village, Ruzhyn district, Zhytomyr region - 6 December 2014) was a Ukrainian poet, prose writer, composer, bard performer. Professor of the Ivan Franko Zhytomyr State University. Honorary citizen of Zhytomyr. Father of Iryna Shynkaruk, younger brother of Borys Shynkaruk.
Volodymyr Shynkaruk was born on 19 August 1954 in the village of Vchoroshne, Ruzhyn district, Zhytomyr region, into a family of doctors. During Khrushchev's "consolidation of districts", the Shynkaruks moved to the Khmelnytskyi region: in 1958-1962, they lived in the urban-type settlement of Teofipol, and in 1962-1966, in the city of Krasyliv.
In 1967, the Shynkaruk family returned to the Zhytomyr region and settled in the village of Chervone, Andrushivka district.
In 1971, Volodymyr Shynkaruk graduated from Chervonne High School and began working as the head of the club at the Chervonne Sugar Plant. In 1972-1976, he studied at the Faculty of Philology of the Zhytomyr Pedagogical Institute, after which he remained teaching at the Department of Russian and Foreign Literature. He served in the army, studied at the postgraduate course of the Kyiv State Pedagogical Institute named after Maxim Gorky (supervisor: Professor Ivan Kruk).
He worked as an assistant, senior lecturer, associate professor, and professor at the Ivan Franko Zhytomyr State University, as well as at the Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts (2000-2002). His research interests lie in the history of literature and art, literary local history. He is the author of the biobibliographic reference book "Literary Zhytomyr Region" (1993), textbooks with the stamp of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine "Ancient Literature. Workshop" (2003, co-authored with P. Bilous), "Ukrainian Literature. XI - XVIII centuries. Workshop" (2006, co-authored with P. Bilous), more than six dozen scientific articles.
He constantly combines scientific and pedagogical activities with concert performances. As a composer and performer, he has won many music festivals and competitions, and has given concerts in Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Germany, France, and the United States. He has recorded and released two magnetic albums "Home for the Soul" (Coll. 1, 1998), "Home for the Soul" (Coll. 2, 2001); CDs "Home for the Soul" (2002) and "The Colour of Silence" (2007), "Tumbleweeds of the Sky" (2009), "Six-String Rain" (2010), "Listening to the Heart" (2013), "More Precious than Blood" (2013).
Shynkaruk is also a member of the National Union of Writers of Ukraine. He is the author of collections of poetry and songs: "Moderato of Blue Twilight (1994), At the Distance of Night (1996), Migratory Rains (1999), Crossroads of Partings (2004), Lullaby for Autumn (2009), In the Shadow of the Sun (2012), collections of prose, Stories (2003), Unconventional Approach (2006), a book of poetry and prose, For Two Lives at Once (2010), and the novel Coach (2011). He translated into Ukrainian the poetic play The Deer King by Carlo Gozzi (staged at the Zhytomyr Academic Music and Drama Theatre named after I. Kocherha in 2011, directed by P. Avramenko), the play The Deer King. Avramenko), Billy Manoff's play The Owl and the Pussycat (staged at the Zhytomyr Music College Folk Theatre by G. Artemenko in 2011), and G. Gorin's tragicomedy A Plague on Your Two Families.
He brought up a whole galaxy of well-known scientists, journalists and artists, including Yurii Kot, Serhii Kudimov, Nataliia Mosiiichuk, Iryna Antonovych, and Honoured Artist of Ukraine Iryna Shynkaruk.
He is an honorary citizen of Zhytomyr (2011). Laureate of the Regional Komsomol Prize named after Mykola Shpak (1986), All-Ukrainian Prize named after I. Ohienko (2008), winner of the First Prize of the All-Ukrainian Literary Contest "Coronation of the Word" in the nomination "Song Texts about Love" (2010).
In the chapter of the book "Art Olympus of Ukraine" dedicated to Shynkaruk, entitled "Perhaps there is no more universal artist in Ukraine today", a quote from the famous Ukrainian psychologist Oleksandr Muzyka is quoted:
"We are subconsciously drawn to talent and secretly envy it. And he is always surprised that we cannot experience so vividly, rejoice so unrestrainedly and live so fully. He is amazed that we are not obligatory, that we are lazy to learn, that we are not creative, that we have everything - someday or later, that we do not live a real life, but cherish self-soothing illusions. He is surprised, but he comes to us anyway, because he wants us to experience the immeasurable joy of creativity. He knows that the joy of creativity is multiplied by the number of people who live it at the same time. ...He lives the way we would like to live. We can't do it because we are lazy, because we are unfocused, because we are dreamers. And he is a creator, so he lives for us fully, fully and brightly!"
