Yurii Shamo (1947-2015) was a Ukrainian composer, performing pianist and music teacher.
He was born on 15 January 1947 in Kyiv in the family of composer Ihor Shamo. He graduated from the Kyiv State Conservatoire with a degree in composition (1970, class of composer Professor A. Shtoharenko). He taught at the Kyiv Institute of Culture. He is the author of many musical works, including mono-operas, song cycles, etc. He wrote music for television films. His works include: 22 piano sonatas, 9 string quartets, 5 choral cycles, more than 60 pieces for accordion and bayan.
Yurii Shamo also frequently gave recitals; he was known and popular as a jazz pianist and improviser.
He was a member of the National Union of Composers of Ukraine.
In the last years of his life, he lived in Germany. He died on 25 August 2015 in Fulda.
