Ukrainian-Dutch composer, conductor and performer.

Biography

Maksym Shalygin was born on January 30, 1985 in Kamyansk.

For the past ten years, the composer has been living and working in The Hague, the Netherlands.
Art

He is the author of works of various genres, including chamber, vocal, symphonic, electro-acoustic music, as well as music for plays, ballets and movies.

Maksym Shalygin synthesizes various methods and approaches in his work. He began to study composition under the guidance of Iryna Ivashchenko, for a year his teacher was the famous Russian composer Borys Tyshchenko (St. Petersburg Conservatory named after M.A. Rimsky-Korsakov), in 2010 he completed his master's degree at the Kyiv State Conservatory named after P. I. Tchaikovsky (class of professor Igor Shcherbakov), diploma work Triple concerto for piano, violin and cello. In 2011, he received another master's degree at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague (he studied with professors Cornelis de Bondt and Diederik Wagenaar).

The well-known Ukrainian composer Svyatoslav Lunyov had a great influence on Shalygin's development.

I really like Lunyov. At least from what he wrote in recent years. I don't know a piece that I wouldn't be interested in listening to. I also really like Valentin Sylvestrov. I periodically listen to his music, in particular symphonies

The author of the music for the 2013 Ukrainian feature film "Such Beautiful People" directed by Dmytro Moiseyev.

Actively cooperates with the vocal ensemble of modern music Alter Ratio. In 2017, the disc "Mariologia" appeared, which included the works of modern Ukrainian composers on medieval prayer texts to the Virgin Mary. Ukrainian composers Maksym Kolomiets, Svyatoslav Lunyov, and Oleksiy Retynsky also took part in the project.

To the 30th anniversary of Ukraine's independence, the independent music publication The Claquers included Maksym Shalygin's work "Letters to Anna", a symphony for solo violin (2009-2010) to the list of iconic academic works of independence.

"Letters to Anna" requires the use of an incredible performance resource, the involvement of opportunities on the verge of the impossible. It is without exaggeration a symphony in the full sense of the word, but for a solo instrument" - Andrii Pavlov, violinist.

In 2012, the composition "Letters to Anna" was awarded at the International Competition of Young Composers "Gaudeamus Muzickweek" (Utrecht, the Netherlands). In the same year, the composer's music was selected for the project "Gesamt" directed by Lars von Trier. Maksym Shalygin participated in the residencies of the Isolation Foundation, Storioni Festival, and Tomoko Mukaiyama Foundation.
Implementation

Maxim Shalygin's works have been performed on stages and festivals, including the Konzergebau, the National Philharmonic of Ukraine, TivoliVredenburg, Zuiderstrandtheater, Gaudeamus Muziekweek, Cello Biënnale Amsterdam, November Music, Soundsofmusic, Wonderfeel, Dag in de Branding (Netherlands), hcmf (Great Britain), New Music Edmonton (Canada), GAIDA Festival (Lithuania), Gogolfest (Ukraine), Musical Contrasts of the 20th Century (Russia) and CIME/ICEM (USA).

Maksym Shalygin's works are performed by leading ensembles of contemporary music: the Netherlands Chamber Choir, Asko|Schönberg, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, DoelenKwartet, Insomnio, Nieuw Ensemble, Slagwerk Den Haag, Amstel Quartet and Keuris Quartet and performers — pianists Vitaly Lyman and Antony Baryshevsky, violinist Emma Storms, drummer Konstantin Napolov and accordionist Vincent van Amsterdam.

Creating music for ballet occupies an important place in Maxim Shalygin's work. In collaboration with choreographer Lonneke van Leth, music was created for the ballets: "Suite - Homage to Alfred Schnittke," "Nachtnet" and "Odyssey," which were performed at the Holland Dance Festival.
