Sapelkin Valentin Ivanovich

Valentyn Ivanovych Sapelkin (born 7 July 1926) is a Ukrainian Soviet composer. Honoured Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1976).

Biography.
He was born on 7 July 1926 in the village of Vesela Lopan, Mikoyanivsky district, Kursk region (now Belgorod district, Belgorod region).

Participant of the German-Soviet war, awarded with combat medals.

In 1958, he graduated from the historical and theoretical faculty of the Kharkiv Conservatory under V. Barabashov, and since the same year he has been teaching at the Dnipro Music School. He took part in the creation of the Dnipro Regional Organisation of the Union of Composers of the Ukrainian SSR, and since 1977 he has been its chairman. Member of the Board of the Union of Composers of the Ukrainian SSR (1978-1982).

Creative work
Civil and military-Soviet themes prevail in the works of V. Sapelkin; his music is characterised by operas on folk-song motifs.

He is the author of vocal and symphonic works (including the cantata "Thoughts on Lenin" on the words of M. Isakovsky, 1970; 2nd ed. 1979), a symphony (1967), "Double Fugue" (1967), "Festive Overture" (1968, 2nd ed. 1979) and "Choreographic Suite" (1980) for orchestra, concerto for domra and orchestra (1977, 2nd ed. 1980), "Elegy" for violin ensemble (1974), fp. plays, choral songs (including the cycle "About sailors and the sea"), music for drama theatre and television productions.
