Rakhlin Natan Hryhorovych

1906-1979

Ukrainian conductor.

People's Artist of the USSR (1948). People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1947).

Biography.

He was born on December 28, 1905 (January 10, 1906) at the station Snovsk (now the city of Snovsk, Chernihiv region) in a musically gifted poor Jewish family. In 1923-1927 he studied at the Kyiv Conservatory, and in 1930 he graduated from the conducting faculty of the Lysenko Music and Drama Institute in Kyiv.

He conducted symphony orchestras in Kharkiv, Kyiv, Moscow, and Kazan. In 1932-1934 he was the conductor of the Kharkiv Radio Committee Symphony Orchestra. In 1934-35, he worked in Kuibyshev, and in 1935-37 - in Donetsk. In 1937-1941 and 1945-1962, he was the chief conductor of the State Symphony Orchestra of the Ukrainian SSR in Kyiv, and in 1941-1945, he was the chief conductor of the State Symphony Orchestra of the USSR (Moscow).

In 1966, with Rakhlin's active participation, the Symphony Orchestra of the Tatar ASSR (Kazan) was founded, which he led until his last days.

In 1938-1966 (with a break) he taught at the Kyiv Conservatory (from 1946 - Professor). In 1967-1979 he was a professor at the Kazan Conservatory.

He was a member of the CPSU (since 1947).

He died on June 28, 1979 in Kazan. He was buried in Kyiv at the Baikove Cemetery (plot No. 33).
His works

Many works by Ukrainian composers were performed for the first time under Rakhlin's baton: Borys Liatoshynskyi's Third Symphony, Viktor Kosenko's Heroic Overture, works by Vadym Homoliaka, Heorhiy Maiboroda, Lev Kolodub, and others.

He was distinguished by his perfect conducting technique, which allowed him to achieve a high musical level in working with the orchestra with a minimum of rehearsals. An artist of the expressive direction, N. Rakhlin was famous for his interpretations of the great works of Beethoven and Tchaikovsky, Dvorak's symphonies, and Liszt's symphonic poems.

1938 - laureate of the first All-Union Conducting Competition (second prize).
1947 - People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR
1948 - People's Artist of the USSR.
1952 - Stalin Prize.
Awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and medals.

Family.
The daughter of an outstanding conductor, Leonora Rakhlina (1934-2006) was a prominent local historian and art critic.
