Ukrainian conductor, professor at the Odesa Conservatory, chief conductor and artistic director of the Odesa Opera and Ballet Theater. People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1948). Member of the Mykola Leontovych Music Society.
Biography.
He was born on October 15, 1901, in Tulchyn in the family of Dmytro Pokrovskyi, director of a commercial school, and Domnika Artemiivna (née Karpovych-Vysotska), daughter of a priest from the village of Viytivka.
His mother had a wonderful voice, sang beautifully, played the piano, and taught her children, Oleksii, Valentyna, and Mykola, the same skills. Dmytro Ivanovych taught at a diocesan school, worked as a director of a commercial school, and once taught with the prominent Ukrainian composer M. D. Leontovych, which is why he sent Mykola to study with him.
The composer entrusted the young chorister and his student with the position of conductor in the chapel. After the tragic death of Leontovych, Mykola Pokrovsky became the director of the chapel, which was later named after M. D. Leontovych. In 1921, he leaves the chapel to study in Kyiv.
1925 - graduates from the Mykola Lysenko State Music and Drama Institute (class of M. Malko).
1924-1926 - musical director of Les Kurbas's Berezil Theater in Kyiv.
1926-1933 - conductor of the Opera House in Odesa.
1934-1940 - conductor of the Kharkiv Opera House.
1944-1975 - Chief Conductor of the Odesa Opera House.
1940-1941 - Chief Conductor of the Lviv Opera House.
1941-1944 - in evacuation. Chief Conductor of the united Kharkiv and Kyiv Opera Theaters (Irkutsk, since 1942).
Since 1947 he has been a teacher and since 1963 a professor at the Odesa Conservatory. Among his students: Borys Hmyria, Halyna Oliynychenko, Bella Rudenko, Halyna Polivanova and others.
1945-1965 - Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Odesa Opera and Ballet Theater.
Mykola Dmytrovych passed away in 1985.
