Pertsov Danylo Volodymyrovych

1973-2021

Ukrainian composer, multi-instrumentalist, designer, member of the Union of Composers of Ukraine.

Life and work

Born in Kyiv in the family of famous graphic artists. He received his primary education at the Lysenko Kyiv Specialized Music School, where he took composition classes with Viktor Patsukevych. In 1992, the composer made his creative debut at the Premiere of the Season festival, where he performed the work Conduct of Babyn Yar by the Kyiv Camerata Ensemble under the direction of Volodymyr Sirenko.

In 1992-1998, he studied at the Kyiv Conservatory (composition class of Myroslav Skoryk, then Maryna Denysenko).

During these years, he became interested in authentic performance, playing the shalmei, zither, and pomort. He was a member of the VISSG composer's association, together with Hryhorii Nemyrovskyi, Viktoriia Poliova, Sviatoslav Luniov, Serhii Yarunskyi, Veniamin Levytskyi, Serhii Zazhytko and Liudmyla Yurina.

In 1997, the first Department of Music and Information Technologies in Ukraine was opened at the NMAU, with equipment purchased with a grant from the Renaissance Foundation. This studio became a significant impetus for the development of the Kyiv school composers' creativity in the electronic direction. In addition to A. Zahaykevych, electronic works were composed in Kyiv by Ihor Stetsiuk, Danylo Pertsov, Sviatoslav Lunev, and Liudmyla Yurina, and in Lviv by Ivan Nebesnyi and Yurii Laniuk.

In 1998-2001, he was a postgraduate student in the class of Levko Kolodub. In the same years, he participated in theater projects - the play "Morphine, Sounds" by Dmytro Bogomazov, the choreographic sketch "Oats and Peter" by Larysa Venediktova, "opera in three approximations" Virginalia for two dancers, verginale, guitar and 6-channel film (together with Mikhail Strelnikov and Vadym Trinch), and in a number of performances.

In 2006, Quetzalcoatl was performed for the SAT trio and an electronic track, with the TanzLaboratorium group led by Larisa Venediktova. In 2008, together with Bogomazov, Venediktova and Alexander Druganov, he created the electroacoustic opera Sweet Dreams, Richard, where he acted as composer, director and programmer. In 2010, he was an intern with Marc Holoniewski in Krakow.

Since 2005, he has been playing in the ensemble "Chorea Kozatska" under the direction of Taras Kompanichenko. In 2010, together with Oleh Timofeev, he founded the Sarmatica project, with which he recorded the album The Lviv Lute, dedicated entirely to the Lviv lute tablature (Ms. 1400/I).

In 2016, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl tragedy, he wrote the oratorio Bitter Star, which premiered at Mystetskyi Arsenal in the presence of the President of Ukraine (National Presidential Orchestra conducted by Kyrylo Karabyts, soloists Iryna Danyleiko and Anatolii Kocherha, director Serhii Proskurnia, video director Serhii Petliuk).

In 2019, he participated in the GAZ opera productions in Vienna and New York at the LaMama Theater, developed and performed the opera's life electronics together with musician Heorhiy Potopalsky.

In 2020, he created the work Investitional clysmatology for the Pandemic Meida Space project at the invitation of Alla Zagaykevych.

He died in the intensive care unit of Kyiv Clinical Hospital #12 due to Covid-19.
