Panchenko Yevgeny Mikhailovich

1914-1972

Yevhen Mykhailovych Panchenko (6 November 1914, Yunakivka village, now Sumy district, Sumy region - 22 January 1972, Kyiv) was a bandura player.

From his biography.
After finishing seven grades, he worked as an accountant at the Pivnenko Sugar Factory. He learned to play the bandura in an ensemble of bandura players led by S. Zhurman (Trostianets), quickly acquired a good playing technique and became a soloist of this ensemble. He took an active part in concerts, performed at the regional and republican reviews of amateur performances. Yevhen's brothers also performed in the ensemble: Valentyn and Borys.

He participated in the German-Soviet war (from 1941), took part in battles, and from 1943 he was a solo bandura player in the army band. He was a participant of the army review of amateur performances, awarded with diplomas, performed as a solo bandura player in Romania, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia.

After demobilisation, he lived in Sumy, worked as an artist of the Sumy Music and Drama Theatre named after Shchepkin. He lived in Berdiansk, Zaporizhzhia region.

The repertoire of the bandura player included Ukrainian folk songs (About Baida, About Karmeliuk, I would take a bandura, Oh, I was courting my cousin) and other works.
