Palkin Vyacheslav Sergeyevich

1935-2008

Viacheslav Serhiiovych Palkin (6 September 1935, Holubivka village - 31 May 2008) was a Ukrainian professor, Head of the Department of Choral Conducting at the I. P. Kotliarevskyi Kharkiv State University of Arts, Honoured Artist of Ukraine, People's Artist of Ukraine, Laureate of the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine (2003), and a correspondent member of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine.
Vyacheslav Palkin was born on 6 September 1935 in the Luhansk region.

After graduating from the conducting and choral faculty of the Kharkiv State Conservatory in 1960, he began his career as a choirmaster, and then as an artistic director and conductor of the professional Ukrainian song choir of the Kharkiv Regional Philharmonic.

In 1962-1975, he was a lecturer, associate professor, and head of the Department of Choral Conducting at the Kharkiv State Institute of Culture.

From 1975 to 1978, he taught a course in aesthetics at the Kharkiv Law Institute.

Since 1978, V. Palkin has worked as an associate professor, head of the Department of Choral Conducting at the I. P. Kotlyarevsky Kharkiv State University of Arts. Since 1988 he was a professor.

He died on 31 May 2008.

Performing career
For 50 years, Palkin directed choral ensembles that won prizes at various competitions and festivals, representing the choral performing arts of Kharkiv in Ukraine, Russia, Moldova, Georgia, the Baltic States, Germany, Poland, and the United States. Among the most famous choirs are the Folk Men's Choir of the Yaroslav the Wise National Law Academy of Ukraine and the Chamber Choir of the Kharkiv Philharmonic, which was founded on the initiative of V. Palkin on the basis of an amateur choir of the regional branch of the Music Society of Ukraine in 1990.

Palkin is the author of the methodological manuals "Vocal and Choral Exercises", "Experience of the Choir Director's Analytical Work on Large Form Works", "Vocal Work in the Choir" and others.

Public activity
V. Palkin is an active public figure. He was a member of the Committee for the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine, a member of the National All-Ukrainian Music Union, the head of the Kharkiv Regional Branch of the Choral Society of Ukraine, a regular participant in the production teams of numerous creative reports of masters of arts and creative groups of the Kharkiv region in Kyiv, a member of the jury of the I, II and III All-Ukrainian competitions of choral conductors, the All-Ukrainian competition of choral groups. He was awarded the title of laureate in the regional ratings "Kharkiv Citizen of the Twentieth Century" and "Kharkiv Citizen of the Year - 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005".
Honours and awards
Palkin was awarded the titles of laureate of awards - the creative prize of the Kharkiv City Executive Committee named after Ilya Slatin (1996), the Kharkiv Regional State Administration named after Oleksandr Maselskyi (1997), the Certificate of Honour of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine (1999), the Order "For Church Merits of St Nestor the Chronicler", and a scholarship of the Kharkiv Regional State Administration named after Mykola Manuil for 2001, Honourable Mention of the Ministry of Culture and Arts of Ukraine (2002).

In 2003, he was awarded the title of laureate of the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine, in 2004 he was awarded the highest honour of the Kharkiv Regional State Administration "Slobozhanska Slava", in 2005 he was awarded the "People's Recognition" prize.

Pupils
Viacheslav Palkin has trained more than 200 qualified specialists, including candidates and doctors of sciences: Doctor of Art History V. Rozhok, Hero of Ukraine, winner of the Taras Shevchenko State Prize of Ukraine, People's Artist of Ukraine R. Kirichenko, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Oleh Mykhailychenko. Its graduates won the title of laureate at the I, II and III All-Ukrainian competitions of choral conductors (A. Syrotenko - 1998, N. Tyagnorenko - 2001, G. Parfenova - 2005).
