Orfeev Serafim Dmytrovych

1904-1974

Ukrainian and Russian composer of the Soviet era, rector of the Odesa Conservatory, professor, holder of the Order of the Badge of Honor.

From 1924 to 1928, he studied at the Voronezh Music College, majoring in double bass.

In 1932, he graduated from the Odesa Music and Drama Institute, where he studied composition with P. Molchanov.

In 1934-1941, he worked as an assistant to Professor M. Vilinsky at the Department of Composition. Until July 1941, he was the executive secretary of the Odesa Board of the Union of Composers of the Ukrainian SSR.

He participated in the Second World War, commanded an artillery platoon, and returned with a serious injury.

Since 1949, he taught at the Odesa Conservatory.

In 1951-1962, he was the rector of the Odesa Conservatory.

Since 1952, he worked as the head of the Department of Music History.

In 1952-1964, he was the chairman of the board of the Odesa branch of the Union of Composers of the Ukrainian SSR.

He wrote memoirs about his teacher Vilinsky.

Among his students were Oleksandr Rovenko and Heorhii Viranovskyi.
