Omelchenko Andrii Fedorovych (2 July 1926, c. Pavlysh, Onufriyivka district, Poltava region, now Kirovohrad region - 9 May 1981 Kyiv) - bandura player, teacher, PhD in Art History (Development of Kobza Art in Ukraine) since 1968.
He was born on 2 July 1926 in the village of Pavlysh, Onufriyiv district, Kirovohrad region.
He attended the children's bandura chapel of the Palace of Culture of the F. Dzerzhynskyi Plant (Kamianske). He studied bandura with Makar Osadchyi, M. Lobko, and H. Kitastyi.
Since November 1943, he has been at the front. He took part in the battles on the First Belarusian Front, was wounded three times. He was awarded the Order of Glory, III class, and many medals.
After the war, he continued his military service as a musician in the Song and Dance Ensemble under the direction of E.P. Sheinin, as part of the Soviet troops in Germany.
He graduated from the Kyiv Conservatory with a degree in bandura (A. Bobyr, V.A. Kabachok) and vocals (professors D.G. Yevtushenko and O.O. Hrodzynskyi) in 1956. He continued his postgraduate studies in the class of Professor M.M. Helis.
Laureate of the competition of performers at the First Universe, Festival of Youth and Students (Moscow, 1957).
Soloist of the Ukrainian Radio Bandura Ensemble since 1952.
Since 1954, he has been a teacher at the Mykola Lysenko Kyiv Specialised Ten-Year Music School. He worked at the Kyiv Philharmonic, the Kyiv Music Institute, and from 1962-71 taught at the R. M. Gliere Kyiv Music School. Among his students were Mykola and Vasyl Lytvyn, A. Mamchenko, S. Petrova, A. Shutko, and others. He performed abroad in Czechoslovakia, Poland, and Finland.
Initiator of the "Bandura Player's Library" series. He compiled several collections for the bandura.
Omelchenko is the author of the first fundamental study in Ukrainian musicology "Development of kobza art in Ukraine" (1968).
Since 1978, he has taught at the Kyiv State Institute of Culture named after O. Korniichuk, was the deputy dean of the orchestra faculty, a member of the Board of the Music Society of the Ukrainian SSR, and the chairman of the artistic council of kobza-bandura players.
He researched folk music, kobzarism (book Folk Singers and Musicians in Ukraine - K. 1980). He compiled collections of plays for bandura. Author of the educational and methodological manual "School of Playing the Bandura" (1975, 1979, and later posthumously in co-authorship with S. Bashtan in 1984, 1989). He is the author of more than 90 articles and editor of 46 music books. Editor of the textbook of bandura playing by M. Opryshko.
