Ukrainian organist and composer.

Biography.

He was born in 1895 in Rohatyn in the family of a UGCC priest, Father Petro Nyzhankivskyi. He studied at the Music Academy of Vienna. Professor of the London Conservatory branch in Cairo (Egypt). Since 1928 he has been a professor of piano and organ in Bern (Switzerland).

Works: solos, three Masses for mixed choir and organ (in Latin). He is also known for the music of the March of the Ukrainian Nationalists (based on poems by Oles Babiy), the anthem of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists.

The new March of the Ukrainian Army was first presented on March 13, 2017, at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, on the eve of the Day of the Ukrainian Volunteer. "We were born in a great hour" was performed by Oleh Skrypka and the Song and Dance Ensemble of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The words of the march are a modified text of the Anthem of Ukrainian Nationalists (We were born in a great hour...) by Oles Babiy and Omelian Nyzhankivsky. On August 24, 2018, the song adapted to modern Ukrainian conditions became the march of the Ukrainian army at the Independence Day parade. It was also the first time that the greeting "Glory to Ukraine!" - "Glory to the Heroes!" - was officially used.
