Mykytiuk Oleksandr

1906-1986

Ukrainian composer and conductor.

Biography.

He was born on September 20, 1906 in the town of Zalishchyky (now a city in the Ternopil region, Ukraine). He graduated from the University of Chernivtsi, where he received a law degree. He studied violin, composition, and conducting at the Chernivtsi Conservatory and also studied at music institutions in the Czech city of Pilsen. He practiced law.

From 1934 to 1940, he worked as a choir and symphony orchestra conductor, director of the music school at the Bukovynian Kobzar Music Society. In 1940-1941, he was the chief conductor of the Chernivtsi Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra.

During the German-Soviet war, he worked in Kyiv. From 1949 he lived in the United States, where he led the Trembita Choir, and from 1952 to 1955 he led the Dumka Choir in New York, where he created a symphony orchestra. He died on July 1, 1986 in Bangor, Maine, USA,
