Mova Denys Mykolayovych

1860-1922

Denys Mykolaiovych Mova (real name Petrov, born c. 1860, Berdiansk, now Zaporizhzhia region - 1922, Odesa) was a Ukrainian opera singer (tenor) and actor.

He studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and had a strong voice with a beautiful timbre. He performed in the Ukrainian troupes of M. Kropyvnytskyi and M. Starytskyi (1885-1889), in the Mykola Sadovsky Theatre (1889-1890, 1983-1895), and in the troupe of P. Saksahanskii (1890-1893, 1895-1909). In 1909, he organised his own private company.

He was the first to perform the role of Petro in the opera Natalka Poltavka by Mykola Lysenko (1889). His repertoire included the roles of Andriy (S. Hulak-Artemovsky's "Cossack Beyond the Danube") and Levko (M. Lysenko's "Drowned").

He is the husband of Ukrainian opera singer and actress Maria Sadovska-Barilotti; their daughter Olena Petliash is also a famous opera singer.
