Ukrainian bandurist, researcher of kobzar music, composer, conductor.

Biography

Born on April 4, 1960 in Sydney (Australia). Graduated from the Faculty of Music of Sydney State University (1984), Sydney Pedagogical Institute (1986). From 1970, he studied playing the bandura with Deryazhny, Bazhul, and then on a scholarship of the Australian Arts Council in North America with Honcharenko, Hryhorii Kitasty, Petr Kitasty, Yemets and Haydamaka. At the Kyiv Conservatory from 1979-84, bandura class (Prof. Bashtana), conducting (Prof. Shchogol), vocals (Prof. M. Yegorycheva and Mykola Kondratyuk). At the same time, in Kyiv, he studied playing the old world bandura with George Tkachenko.

Worked as a teacher in schools in Australia and since 1988 in Toronto (Canada). Since 1988, the concertmaster of the Ukrainian Bandurist Band named after Shevchenko. Founder of the Canadian Bandurist Chapel (1991). Since October 1999, he has been an Honored Artist of Ukraine. Order "For Merit" of the III century. (August 2009).

He gave concerts in Australia, Europe and North America with solo concerts on the bandura, as well as accompanied by a symphony orchestra. The first CDs of bandura instrumental music were released (1982, 1985, 1988, 1989), the first CD (1992) and other CDs accompanied by an orchestra (1998, 2000), a video tutorial on playing the bandura (2001), a CD performed by the Canadian Band bandurists (2005, 2009). The author of more than 90 articles and references related to Ukrainian music, kobzarstvo and the history of bandura. Researcher of the work of Hnat Hotkevich and Kharkiv bandura. Author of music for several documentaries.

In 2007-2008, he was a graduate student at the Kharkiv State Academy of Culture. In February 2009, he defended his dissertation on the topic "Cultural and artistic aspects of the genesis and development of performance at the Kharkiv bandura" from the specialty 26.00.01 — theory and history of culture for the degree of candidate of art history at the Kharkiv State Academy of Culture. In 2012, he entered doctoral studies at the Institute of Linguistics, Folklore and Ethnography of ANU.

Since 2013, a researcher at Monash University, in Melbourne, Australia.

In 1988, one of the founders of the first Ukrainian-Canadian joint venture JV Kobza, which specialized in musical and cultural activities.
