1959-2015

Composer — arranger, sound engineer, bassoonist, teacher.

Biography

Roman Melnyk was born into a family of teachers. Mother, Oksana Yuriivna, came from a family of teachers. She received her education at Uzhgorod University (Faculty of Ukrainian Philology). She also received a professional musical education: as a student of the Uzhgorod School of Music, she graduated from two departments (conductor-choral and vocal), later she graduated from the Lviv Conservatory (as a choral conductor in Yu. Lutsiv's class). She researched the song folklore of Transcarpathia and defended her PhD thesis. Associate Professor of Art History.

Father, Vasyl Mykhailovych, came from a family of peasants, graduated from the Faculty of History of Uzhhorod University, doctor of historical sciences, professor, taught the history of Ukraine.

Along with general education, Roman received a musical education. First at the music school in Ivano-Frankivsk in the piano class (1967-1973), and later in the Kyiv secondary special music boarding school named after M. Lysenko (1973-1977) in the bassoon class.

From 1977 to 1986, he studied at the St. Petersburg State Conservatory named after M. Rimsky-Korsakov, majoring in "Orchestral instruments (bassoon)". His studies were interrupted by his service in the army: he served in Moscow, where he played in military bands.

After completing his education, he returns to Ukraine. He found a job as a bassoonist of the Lviv Opera and Ballet Theater (1985-1990). He was an extremely talented bassoonist, all solo parts were entrusted to Roman Melnyk. Subsequently, he received an invitation to the orchestra of the Opera and Ballet Theater in Novi Sad (Serbia) as a bassoonist-soloist (1991-1993). As a performer, for some time he was an artist of the Lviv Regional Philharmonic - for 2 years (1992-1994). In the late period of his life, he was an artist of the orchestra of the Honored Academic Chapel "Trembita" (20.08.2012—22.04.2015).

He combined performing activities with the work of an arranger: since 1990, he cooperated with the Ukrainian-Canadian enterprise "Kobza", and was also a long-term composer and arranger of the "Chervona Ruta" festival (1991-2008). There were also other facets of cooperation with the Chervona Ruta festival: work in the Jury of the final competition of the 'Chervona Ruta 2009' competition (Chernivtsi, September), as well as in the Lviv regional selection contests of the 'Chervona Ruta' festival (2006, 2008, 2010, 2014).

He also worked for almost ten years (1995-2004) at the recording studio of the TVD construction company (the owners of the TVD company are musicians, so the company also had a recording studio, a music band "TVD-music" and a rehearsal hall). Famous musicians invited R. Melnyk to collaborate. For example, Oleg Kulchytsky (R. Melnyk from 2005 to 2007 was a composer, arranger and pianist of the art agency "Muse"). In 2005, he sets up a home recording studio, in which he works until the last days of his life as a composer, arranger and conducts private vocal and bassoon lessons.

He often initiated creative projects himself: the recording of UPA songs with the "Trembita" band, the recording of the album of the "Sokoly" band, the "Ukraine, know your heroes" and "With a song to the people" concert tours. As a teacher, he worked for two years at the Lviv Secondary Specialized Music Boarding School named after S. Krushelnytska (1997-1999) as a bassoon teacher (according to M. Sora, Roman worked part-time earlier in this school, possibly since 1993).

Roman Melnyk died on April 22, 2015 from a brain stroke in Lviv, buried in the village of Yasnyska, Yavoriv district, Lviv region.

On October 14 and 15, Kyiv Municipal Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet hosted two concerts by the winners of the All-Ukrainian Festival of Contemporary Song and Popular Music "Chervona Ruta" accompanied by the symphony orchestra and theater choir.
