Mayboroda Volodymyr Yakovych

1852-1917

Ukrainian opera artist (bass), concert singer. Soloist of the Bolshoi Theater (Moscow). Participant in Mykola Lysenko's anniversary concert in St. Petersburg.

Biography.

Born in the village of Dubrivka (now Zhytomyr region) in the family of a priest. At a young age he sang in a church choir in Zhytomyr. In 1872, he graduated from the Zhytomyr Theological School, after which he served in the Volyn Theological Consistory in 1874. Then he worked in a state bank.

In 1876-1879, he studied singing at the St. Petersburg Conservatory (class of K. Everardi, class of theory of A. Rubts). He took private lessons in stage performance from V. Samoilov, and in 1882 and 1883 (in the summer) he improved his performance skills in Milan with F. Lamperti, G. Ronconi and A. Buzzi.

He made his debut as an opera singer in 1876 in a performance by conservatory students at the Stone Theater in the role of Don Diego (The African by J. Meyerbeer). In 1880-1888 he sang at the Mariinsky Theater (Pererburg), in 1889-1892 he was a soloist at the Bolshoi Theater (Moscow), then returned to the Mariinsky Theater, where he performed until 1906. He also toured the Odesa Opera House.

He toured with concerts in Kyiv (1882), Odesa, Kharkiv, Kovno, Zhytomyr, Tiflis, Pyatigorsk, Kislovodsk, Voronezh, Rybinsk, Yaroslavl, Vilna, Warsaw, and Riga (1893). In 1904, he took part in Mykola Lysenko's anniversary concert in St. Petersburg.

He had a strong bass-cantante voice with a large range. The singer's repertoire included 94 parts.
