Matyuk Viktor Hryhorovych

1852-1912

Ukrainian composer, priest (UGCC) and folklorist.

Biography.

He was born into the family of a sexton. He studied at the clergy school in Przemysl and at the Lviv Theological Seminary. He was the heir to the traditions of the Przemysl school of composition, a student of Mykhailo Verbytskyi and Porfirii Bazhanskyi. He was a parish priest in Kariv, Sokal district. He is buried there. As a priest, Viktor Matiuk took care of public education, founded centers of "Enlightenment" in villages. He published the School Songbook, based on Ukrainian church music. As a composer, Matiuk was most notable for his solo singing, creating almost 50 songs of this genre based on the words of M. Shashkevych, V. Masliak, I. Hushalevych, A. Mickiewicz, and B. Kyrchiv. His "Vesnivka" became part of the golden fund of Ukrainian vocal music. Viktor Matiuk also had significant achievements in works of secular themes.

The Sokal Children's Art School is named after Viktor Matiuk.
