Borys Maksymovych (18 June 1906, Kyiv - 3 January 1994, Detroit) was a pianist and teacher. Professor (1934).
Biography.
Boris was born in Kyiv. He came from a family of musicians: his father was a violinist and his mother was a pianist. He graduated from the Mykola Lysenko Kyiv Music and Drama Institute (1924-1928, piano class of H. Beklemishev and S. Barer). He performed widely in Kyiv and other cities of Ukraine. 1934-1944 - Professor at the Kyiv Conservatory (now the National Music Academy of Ukraine). In 1944, he emigrated to Germany, where he was forced to work, and after the end of the Second World War, he performed in concerts for the American and French armies. Then he toured with solo concerts in many cities of Western Europe: Hamburg, Hanover, Augsburg (1949), Lübeck (1949; all cities in Germany), Amsterdam (1950; Netherlands), London (1950, Great Britain), Paris (France), etc.
Since 1950, he lived in Detroit (Michigan, USA), where he conducted concert activities. Since 1952, he has been a professor at the Ukrainian Music Institute in Detroit. He also performed to great acclaim in New York (USA; 1951, 1958, 1962), Toronto (Canada; 1956), and others.
His repertoire included works by Ukrainian (M. Lysenko, V. Kosenko, N. Nyzhankivsky, L. Revutsky, A. Hnatyshyn), Russian (P. Tchaikovsky, S. Rachmaninoff, I. Stravinsky) and foreign (L. van Beethoven, R. Schumann, A. Scarlatti, F. Liszt, F. Chopin) composers. He was the first performer of V. Kosenko's piano concerto.
Maksymovych took part in the All-Ukrainian competitions of musicians (1930, 1931) and the All-Union competition of musicians-performers in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg; 1935). He performed as a soloist with symphony orchestras (Vienna, 1945, conducted by H. Weisbach; Detroit, 1969), as well as under the auspices of the Ukrainian Music Institute.
He accompanied Ukrainian singers (most often his wife, V. Bohachenko-Maksymovych).
He died in Detroit.
