Maiboroda Platon Ilarionovych

1918-1989

Ukrainian composer, People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (since 1968), laureate of the State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR named after T. Shevchenko (1962), People's Artist of the USSR (since 1979). Brother of the composer George Maiboroda.

Biography

He was born on December 1, 1918 in the village of Plekhivshchyna (now the village of Globynsky District, Poltava Region) in a peasant family. In this family, a kind of ensemble arose, consisting of a violin, a bandura, a balalaika, and a mandolin. Platon learned to play the balalaika by ear from an early age. And his older brother, George Maiboroda, who was the first in the family to pave the way to music, began to teach him musical literacy.

In 1932, the family moved to Zaporozhye, where George Maiboroda was working at the time.

The German-Soviet war began, and the Maiborody brothers stood up to defend the Motherland. At the end of 1945, P. Maiboroda returned to the Motherland after demobilization.

From 1939 to 1941, he studied at the Kyiv Conservatory in the composition class of L. M. Revutsky, which he graduated in 1947. For about six years, Platon Ilarionovych worked as a teacher at the Reingold Glier Kyiv Music School and at the evening music school for young people. For many years, P. Maiboroda collaborated with the Kyiv Film Studio named after Oleksandr Dovzhenko, wrote music for numerous films.

He died at the age of 71 on July 8, 1989 in Kyiv. He was buried at Baikovo Cemetery in Kyiv (plot No. 2). The author of the grave monument is architect Anatoly Chemerys, sculptor Mykola Bilyk.

The author of numerous songs and choruses, arrangements of folk songs, as well as lyrical songs - including "Rushnychok", "If you love", "We will go where the grass is inclined", "Kyiv Waltz". In the creative work, there is also the symphonic poem "Heroic Overture", the vocal-symphonic poem "Poplar" (words by Taras Shevchenko), music for dramatic performances, as well as for films. Throughout his creative career, Platon Maiboroda fruitfully cooperated with the State Television and Radio of the Ukrainian SSR. His choral works, lyrical songs, symphonic music were recorded with the choir and symphonic orchestra of the State Television and Radio and are a golden fund and property of the state.

Commemoration

Every year before P. Maiboroda's birthday, his wife - Tetyana Maiboroda-Vynnychenko - organizes concerts of his works, radio broadcasts and TV programs; collected the memories of contemporaries, published articles, initiated the creation of a memorial office-luminary at the TsDAMLM (on Sofiivska Square), prepared a CD release.

On December 1, 2018, a memorable date is celebrated at the state level in Ukraine - 100 years since the birth of Platon Maiboroda (1918–1989), a composer.

Zaporizhia Music School bears the composer's name.

A street in the Shevchenkiv district of Kyiv, as well as streets in Dnipro, Brovary, and Sorokino, Luhansk region, were named in honor of Platon Maiboroda.
