Magazyner Yakov Samailovich

1883-1941

Yakiv Samiylovych Shmazhyner (11 October (23 October) 1883, Zvenyhorodka, now Cherkasy region - 30 May 1941, Kyiv) was a Ukrainian violinist and teacher. Honoured Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1938).
Biography.
He studied at the Odesa Music College in the class of A. Fidelman and at the Leipzig Conservatory with Professor G. Zitt. After graduating from the St. Petersburg Conservatory (class of Professor I. Nalbandian), he taught at the Riga Conservatory. From 1913 he was a concertmaster of the S. Kusevytsky Orchestra. Since 1917, he lived and worked in Kyiv.

Since 1922, he has been a professor at the Kyiv Conservatory.

Shmagyner brought up a galaxy of highly talented musicians who continued the performing and pedagogical traditions of the teacher's class in their activities. Among them are Honoured Artists of the Ukrainian SSR N. Budovsky (Kyiv) and D. Sheinin (Donetsk), winner of the First All-Union Competition B. Prytykina, Professor of the Riga Conservatory S. Kavun, conductor S. Feldman (Kuibyshev, now Samara), talented teachers I. Gutman, I. Kryvytskyi, O. Lysakovskyi, L. Benderskyi, V. Zeldis, Oleksandr Weisfeld
