Levkovych Oleksandr

Levkovych Oleksandr (26 January 1952, Yemetsk, Arkhangelsk Oblast, Russia) is a composer, pianist, organist and teacher.

Oleksandr Levkovych is a composer with a bright individual handwriting, a master of orchestral writing, who subtly feels the specifics of the sound of each instrument, its timbre colouring, and constantly experiments with sound. In his works, Levkovych combines modern compositional techniques with traditional classical ones.

Oleksandr Levkovych emigrated to Israel in 1990 and has lived in Toronto, Canada, since 1992. In 1996, he received a diploma at the ILBA International Composition Competition in Italy, and in 2001, he was awarded the prize for best music at the 2001 The Nickel Film and Video Festival (Canada). In 2006, he became the composer-in-residence of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra.

Father of D. Levkovych. Graduated from the Lviv Conservatory. Graduated from the Lviv Conservatory (1976, piano class of L. Krykh; 1980, composition class of V. Flysa). Since then he worked as a teacher at a music school, head of the musical department of the puppet theatre in Cherkasy. In 1985-90 he headed the youth section of the UWC Kyiv organisation. In 1990-93 he lived in Israel. Since 1993 - in Toronto. Since 1996, he has been a member of the Music Centre and the League of Canadian Composers and Copyright Agency.

Levkovych's works are performed by the National Ensemble of Soloists "Kyiv Camerata", the National Symphony Orchestra (Kyiv), the Toronto, Baku and Swedish Philharmonic Orchestras, the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra, and others.
