Kurbanov Valery Bilyalovych

1939-2009

Singer (bass-baritone), director, theater critic, teacher. Professor (1999). Honored Artist of Ukraine (2007), Honored Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR (1967). Diploma winner of the All-Union Review of Amateur Art (Moscow, 1955).

Biography.

Graduated from the Moscow Conservatory (1962, vocal class of O. Baturin), Kyiv Institute of Theater Arts (1978, directing faculty).

Since 1962, he has been a soloist at the M. Akhundov Azerbaijan Opera and Ballet Theater (Baku), where he also staged Puccini's La bohème.

In 1970-1972, he was an intern at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, where he also studied at the Higher Courses of Directing with B. Pokrovsky.

From 1978 he studied at the Kyiv University of Theater, Cinema and Television: 1980-85 - artistic director of the directing course for foreign students, 1990-95 - the first music directing course in Ukraine, 1983-86 - dean of the theater faculty, since 1986 - head of the department of music education. At the same time, in 1978-84 he was a soloist of the Philharmonic, and from 1995 he taught at the National Music Academy of Ukraine.

He performed on the theater and concert stages of the CIS countries, Germany, Poland, Bulgaria, Turkey, Austria, and others. He has recorded on the radio. Artistic director of productions:

"The Tsar's Bride by Rimsky-Korsakov (2004; all at the Young Opera Theater-Studio at the National Music Academy of Ukraine).

Among his students are V. Basha, O. Kaminska, K. Kashlykov, O. Kuzhelnyi, V. Pylypchak, T. Romaniuk, D. Savchenko.
