Kovach Ihor Kostiantynovych

1924-2003

Ukrainian composer. Honored Artist of Ukraine (1975).

He was born on November 12, 1924 in Proletarska village, Rostov region.

Participant of the Second World War. Graduated from the Kharkiv Conservatory, composition class of V. Barabashov. In 1947-54 he worked as a teacher at a music school and a music college in Yalta. Since 1959, he has been a lecturer, associate professor (1977), professor (1982), and head of the Department of Composition and Instrumentation (since 1983) at the Kharkiv Institute of Arts. Laureate of the G. Wieniawski International Composition Competition (Poznan, 1966), the Zubarev Regional Komsomol Prize (1968). Honored Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1975), member of the National Union of Composers of Ukraine.

Author of music for the popular science film Dialectic of Quality (1977) and documentaries: "The Revolution Continues" (1967), "Pages of Biography" (1970). I. Kovach is the author of the following works: opera-ballet "The One Who Runs on the Waves" (1987); opera "Blue Islands" (1988); children's ballets "Northern Fairy Tale" (1975), "Bambi" (1983); musical comedies "By the Blue Sea" (1977), "The Way to the Sun" (1981), "Fictitious Marriage" (1988); voc. -Symphony - Oratorio (1970), "Song of Assol" (1990); for symphony orchestra - Suite (1959), Suite "Country Greenland" (1994), poem "Tavria" (1967), Festive Overture (1963), 4 symphonies (1965, 1981 - "In Memory of A. Khachaturyan", 1983, 1984 - "Soldier's Dreams"), "Dithyramb" (1976); for stone orchestra - Sonata-piccolo (1975); Concertino - for piano and orchestra (1974), for violin and chamber ensemble (1985), for oboe and chamber orchestra (1994), for cello with concerto (1976, 1990), etc. plays, choruses, romances, songs; music for theater performances and films.

He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, the Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd class, and medals. Honored Artist of Ukraine (1975).

He died on October 24, 2003 in Kharkiv.
