Kostin Alexander

1939-2022

Oleksandr Vasyliovych Kostin (real name Kostyna) (*22 September (9 September) 1939, Samarkand - 9 November 2022, Kyiv[1]) was a Soviet and Ukrainian composer, teacher, professor (1999), member of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine (1971). Honored Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1990). Laureate of the Shevchenko Prize (1992). People's Artist of Ukraine (1996).
He graduated from the music school in Nizhyn. In 1971, he graduated from the Kyiv Conservatory, composition class of Andrii Shtoharenko.

In 1973-1978 he was the head of the musical department of the Russian Drama Theater.

In 1978-1981, he was the head of the editorial office of the Musical Ukraine publishing house, in 1987-1997 he was the artistic director of the Kyiv House of Organ and Chamber Music, and since 1997 he has been the head of the opera directing department at the NMAU.

Kostin is best known for his ballets The Little Mermaid, The Demon, Invitation to Execution, and Pushkin, which were staged at the National Opera House. In addition, Kostin's oeuvre includes 4 operas, symphonic, chamber instrumental and chamber vocal works.

He is the author of operas, music for theatrical performances, films: operas "The Golden-Horned Deer" based on the poem by D. Pavlychko (1982), "Good Intentions" (1984), "The Prize", "Seven Mothers of Semen Sineborodko" (1992), "Orgy" based on the drama by Lesya Ukrainka (1993), "Suleiman and Roksolana" (1995); musical "Countess Sofia Potocka" (1994); ballets "Invitation to Execution" based on the novel by V. Nabokov. Nabokov's novel (1984), The Little Mermaid (1988), and The Demon based on Lermontov's poem (1992); symphonic poem Ivan Vyshensky based on Ivan Franko's poem (1993); songs.
