Kolomiets Maxim

1981

Maksym Kolomiets was born in Kyiv in 1981.

He graduated from the National Music Academy of Ukraine in 2005 with a degree in oboe and in 2009 with a degree in composition.

In 2016, he graduated from the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne with a degree in composition from the class of Prof. Johannes Schölhorn.

He is the winner of the Gradus ad Parnassum (Kyiv, 2000) and Step to the Left (St. Petersburg, 2012) competitions.

He is also the third prize winner of the Vareler Komponistenpreis (Oldenburg, 2015).

In 2019, he taught as a composer at the Course. International Master Classes of New Music in Lviv.

In 2020, he was selected for the music catalogue of outstanding Ukrainian artists by the Ukrainian Institute:

In 2020, he became a member of the jury at the III International Competition-Laboratory of productions by young directors Musical Art Project.

As an oboist, he has participated in festivals and masterclasses at the Ensemble-Akademie (Freiburg), Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik in Darmstadt (Darmstadt), impuls Akademie (Graz), Per Suonare l'Oboe (Freiburg), where he took lessons from such oboists as Jaime González, Ernest Rombout, Ann-Kathrin Brüggemann.

As a solo oboist, he performed with such ensembles as: Kyiv Soloists, Musica Camerata, Russische Kammerphilharmonie St. Petersburg, Kyiv Symphony Orchestra. Together with the Ukho Ensemble, he performed the Ukrainian premiere of Luca Francesconi's Oboe Concerto No. 2 and as an ensemble player he has performed works by P. Boulez, S. Gervasoni, B. Ferneyhough, L. Berio, D. Kurtág and many others.

He is the author of two operas. One of which was presented in a concert version in October 2020 by the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra with Luigi Gaggero as conductor.

Maksym is actively engaged in arrangements. Among his works are a series of compositions for the "Mystery of Foggy Albion" project, compositions by Frank Zappa, and arrangements of classical works for the Luna Ensemble of Baroque music.

Maksym's music has been performed at many European and American festivals, such as MATA-Festival (New York), Summer New Music Courses in Darmstadt (Darmstadt), New Talents (Cologne), Donaueschinger Musiktage (Donaueschinger), Warsaw Autumn (Warsaw), World Music Days (Leuven), Other space (Moscow), Gogolfest (Kyiv), Contrasts (Lviv), Randfestspiele (Zeppernick), Ukrainian Contemporary Music Festival (New York), and others.

Among the performers of his works were: National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine (Kyiv), Kyiv Chamber Orchestra (Kyiv), Kyiv Symphony Orchestra (Kyiv), Ensemble MusikFabrik (Cologne), Ensemble Ascolta (Stuttgart), airborne extended (Vienna), MAM Manufaktur für aktuelle Musik (Cologne), Lions Gate Trio (USA, Europe), Neo Quartet (Gdansk), Ukho Ensemble (Kyiv), Syrinx Flute Quartet (Moscow), Ensemble Nostri Temporis (Kyiv), GAM-Ensemble (Moscow), Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble (Moscow), Vladislav Pesin (Moscow), Ian Pace (London), Roman Yusipei (Essen), Helen Bledsoe (Cologne), Hayk Melikyan (Yerevan) and others.

Maksym Kolomiets is a co-founder of the contemporary music ensemble Ensemble Nostri Temporis (2007) and a founder of the baroque music ensemble Luna Ensemble (2014).

Since 2015, he has also been working as a solo oboist in the contemporary music ensemble Ukho (Kyiv), and since 2018 as a solo oboist in the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra.

Together with Dmytro Radzetskyi, he is the organiser of the Art-cube CoRa art space, which regularly hosts concerts, broadcasts, acoustic experiments and various collaborations. In 2020, the KoRa Late Night Show project was launched at the Art Cube. Every week, famous Ukrainian musicians are invited to the studio for interviews and music.
