Roman Cahute (b. 26 March 1955, Toronto - d. 22 April 2023) was a Canadian-Ukrainian singer, accordionist and composer, host of numerous festivals. Founder and permanent leader of the band Burya. Host of the Stay Ukrainian My Friends programme on the Kontakt Ukrainian Television Network. Director and producer of a number of Ukrainian artists in Canada
Born in 1955 in Toronto, Canada. He was a second-generation Ukrainian Canadian, his family descended from immigrants to the province of Manitoba. He started his musical career in 1962 as a drummer in his father's band Maurice Cahute. The singer's father died when Roman was 11 years old. Shortly before his death, he brought home his accordion, and Roman began to play it. In 1969, he founded the band, which was later named Burya. The band performs Ukrainian dance music and songs intended for fun, parties, weddings, etc. The band's repertoire consists of kolomyikas, hopak, polkas, waltzes, and tangos.
Roman Kohut is one of the most prolific Ukrainian musicians outside of Ukraine. He has released over 30 albums both as a member of Burya and as a soloist. He participated in the recording of 178 albums. He has performed with Nana Muscuri, Sofia Rotaru, Liza Dalbello, Melissa Manchester and Catherine McKinnon.
