Kanerstein Oleksandr Mykhailovych

1933-2006

Soviet and Ukrainian composer, teacher, pianist. Honored Artist of Ukraine (1993). Laureate of the B. Lyatoshynsky Prize (1996). Laureate of the M. Verikivsky Prize (2003).

Biography.

Son of Mykhailo Kanerstein.

Graduated from the Kyiv Conservatory, composition class of B. Lyatoshynsky (1955), piano class of K. Mykhailov (1956).

After conductor N. Rakhlin's performance of Kanerstein's First Symphony in 1955, the Soviet Music magazine noted that the composer "made a serious bid to create a large form saturated with true symphonism."

Since 1957 he has been a teacher at the Kyiv Music School.

О. Kanerstein composed the opera "Skkuti odnoy chastoyu" ("Chained by one chain"); the ballet "Eupraxia"; a children's ballet on the historical and revolutionary theme "Malchysh-Kibalchysh"; musical and choreographic paintings: "The Pass", "Don Quixote and Dulcinea"; four symphonies; concertos for piano, violin, balalaika, oboe and bassoon with orchestra; cantatas: "We Are With You, Sister Russia" based on poems by O. Novytsky, "The Twentieth Century" based on poems by V. Korotych. All the works are unique in the use of expressive means, subordinated to the disclosure of the content.

Since 1957, he has been a teacher at the Kyiv Music College.

Honored Artist of Ukraine (1993). Laureate of the B. Liatoshynskyi Prize (1996), M. Verikivskyi Prize (2003).

Member of the National Union of Musicians of Ukraine.

vocal and symphonic cantatas: "XX Century" (comp. by V. Korotych, 1986), etc.
for mixed choir, piano trio and cymbals - "Kyiv Diptych - Memories" (comp. by M. Zerov, 2001)
