Gurov Leonid Simonovych

1910-1993

Ukrainian and Moldavian composer and teacher of the Soviet era, 1958 - Honored Artist of the Moldavian SSR, 1962 - Professor, 1985 - People's Artist of the Moldavian SSR, 1986 - Laureate of the State Prize of the Moldavian SSR.

Biography

In 1932, he graduated from the Odesa Conservatory, composition class of M. Vilinskyi and P. Molchanov, and taught there until 1941.

In 1934-1940, he was the secretary of the Odesa regional branch of the Union of Composers of Ukraine, headed by his teacher N. Vilinskyi.

During the war, he was evacuated to Irkutsk, a teacher and deputy director of the Irkutsk Music School.

After returning in 1945, he worked as a teacher of music theory and composition at the Chisinau Conservatory restored by D. Hershfeld, and in 1947 he became an associate professor.

In 1948-1956 he was a member of the Presidium of the Union of Composers of Moldova.

At his request, he worked at the Tianjin Conservatory (China), and in 1958 returned to Chisinau.

In 1960-1964 he was the rector of the Chisinau Conservatory.

In 1962, he became a professor at the Conservatory (G. Muzycescu Institute of Arts).

As a composer, he used late romantic and impressionist manifestations, which he combined with Moldovan folklore.

Music critics ranked him among the most influential music teachers of composers in Moldova.

As a teacher, he trained, among others, L. S. Berov, Vasile Zagorski, M. V. Caftanat, Solomon Lobel, Semen Lungul, I. B. Milutin, George Năgă, P. B. Rivilis, A. G. Stircu, Zlata Tâcăc, and David Fedov.

1934, 1959 - Two sonatas for violin and piano,
1935 - for choir and piano - cantata on folk songs "Leaf of Chumizi",
1938, 1946 ("Chapaev") - two symphonies,
1949 - "Children's Suite for Piano",
1949 - "Jubilee Cantata" - to the 25th anniversary of the Moldavian SSR - together with D. Hershfeld and M. Ponomarenko, to the lyrics of A. Lupan and P. Kruchenyuk,
1955 - Capriccio for harp on Moldovan folk themes,
1958 - Ballad "Gladiator" (based on the words of Lermontov),
1987 - "Rachmaniana" - suite for orchestra,
Concerto for harp and organ with orchestra,
Cantatas, arrangements of folk songs, romances, choruses.
