Gurfinkel Vladimir Yakovlevich

1896-1978

Volodymyr Yakovlevych Hurfinkel (born 26 August 1896, Poltava - died 23 December 1978, Kyiv) was a Ukrainian Soviet conductor, clarinetist; Honoured Artist of the Ukrainian SSR since 1949.

Biography.
He was born on 14 [26] August 1896 in Poltava (now Ukraine). In 1916, he graduated from the clarinet class of the Poltava Music School. After graduation, he taught there: from 1925 to 1931, he was the conductor of the student orchestra, and at the same time he was the military conductor of Poltava.

Since 1931, he worked in Moscow: conductor of the model orchestra and head of the bandmaster class at the Mikhail Frunze Military Academy; since 1936, he was an assistant, then deputy inspector of the Red Army orchestras, and at the same time a teacher at the military faculty of the Conservatory (he studied there from 1937 to 1941). In 1944-1950, he was an inspector of military bands of the Kyiv Military District and at the same time a lecturer at the Military Faculty of the Kyiv Conservatory. He died in Kyiv on 23 December 1978.
