Oleksandr Horowitz (b. 19 September 1876, Kyiv - d. 19 February 1927, Kharkiv) was a Ukrainian pianist, music teacher, and music critic. Uncle of the pianists Volodymyr and Regina Horowitz.
Biography.
Horowitz was born on 7 [19] September 1876 in Kyiv (now Ukraine). He studied at the Kyiv Music School in the class of Hryhorii Khodorovsky-Moroz. He graduated from the Faculty of Law at St Volodymyr's University in Kyiv; in 1902, he graduated from the Moscow Conservatory, where he studied with Oleksandr Scriabin.
From 1903, he worked in Kharkiv as a teacher at a music school; from 1917, he was a professor at the conservatory and higher music and pedagogical courses. In 1903-1913, he also worked as a music correspondent for the Kharkiv newspaper Yuzhnyi Krai. He died in Kharkiv on 19 February 1927.
Creativity
He gave concerts as a soloist and ensemble player in Kyiv, Odesa, and Kharkiv. His repertoire included works by Franz Liszt, Edvard Grieg, and Anton Arensky. He promoted the works of Alexander Scriabin.
