Gorokhov Oleksiy Mykolayovych

1927-1999

Ukrainian violinist of Russian origin.

Biography.

Born in Moscow. He studied at the Central Music School (1934-1944) and the Moscow Conservatory, graduating in 1949 from the class of Prof. Zeitlin. In 1955 he completed an assistantship under Yampolsky. He received the title of Candidate of Arts.

Having won prizes at several international violin competitions, he toured the Soviet Union, as well as Germany, Poland, Denmark, Sweden, Romania, Portugal, and Korea. Between 1949 and 1951, he participated in several international violin competitions, including the 1950 Bach Competition in Leipzig, where he was awarded 2nd prize, and the 1951 Queen Elizabeth Competition in Brussels, where he was awarded seventh prize.

Since 1957, Horokhov has been a professor at the Kyiv Conservatory, where he taught until his death. Ihor Andrievsky was an intern with him. Among Horokhov's students: Garik Khachbabian, artist of the orchestra of the Taras Shevchenko National Opera and Ballet Theater of Ukraine Volodymyr Kvach, teacher of the Glier KIM Volteria Kolesnyk, Honored Artist of Ukraine Herman Safonov, acting associate professor of the violin department of the Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine Nina Sivachenko, artist of the National State Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine Olena Pushkarska, artist of the Kyiv Camerata Soloists Ensemble Oleksandr Ivanov, and others.
Creative activity

During his 50 years of creative work, Horokhov recorded a large number of CDs, including the first in the USSR to record 6 violin concertos by Paganini (the second in the world after Salvatore Accardo). He left over 70 hours of music recordings for Ukrainian radio, including sonatas and partitas by J.S. Bach, 24 Paganini caprices, 24 Shostakovich preludes (Horokhov's own arrangements), violin concertos by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn, Brahms, and others. A number of his recordings with the Kyiv Opera Orchestra were digitized and released in 2006.

Ukrainian composers such as Andriy Shtoharenko, Vitaliy Kireiko, and Mykola Dremliuha have written music for Oleksiy Horokhov.

Since 2020, the Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine has been holding an international competition - the Oleksiy Horokhov Festival.
