Gerke August Grigorievich

1790-1848

August Grigorievich Gerke (b. 1790, Lüneburg - d. after 1848) was a German and Ukrainian violinist, conductor, teacher and composer. Father of the pianist Anton Gerke.
He was born in 1790 in Lüneburg (Germany). A Pole by birth. From the mid-1810s he gave concerts in Ukraine. In 1822 he worked in Bremen, in 1823 - in Kyiv, in 1824 - in the court chapel in Dessau. From 1825 to 1835 he served as Kapellmeister of Count Hansky's serf orchestra in Zhytomyr, gave concerts in Kharkiv, and taught. From 1835 he was director of music in Kassel. From 1848 he lived in Detmold.

He is the author of orchestral works (including "Military Overture with Three Pistol Shots"), pieces for violin and orchestra ("Potpourri in the Polish Style," "Three Polonaises"), and more.
