Nikolai Dmitrievich Dmitriev (* August 5, 1829, Moscow - † July 15, 1893, Taganrog) was a Russian and Ukrainian composer, conductor, pianist, and teacher.
He studied music privately, graduated from a closed musical institution with A. I. Villuan, and served in the provincial judicial department.
Since 1840, he has performed as a pianist and conductor in many cities of modern Russia and Ukraine, including charity concerts in Vyatka, Kazan, Mariupol, Ryazan, and Taganrog.
He studied at the Law Faculty of Kazan University.
In 1857-1963, he lived in Kharkiv and taught piano. At the same time, he opened a music salon.
In 1861, he organized quartet evenings in Kharkiv.
He is the author of about 100 romances - 55 were published in sheet music, piano pieces, church music, and one symphony (unfinished). The most famous among his romances is "Sosna" ("In the wild north...") based on Lermontov's poems and dedicated to the singer Oleksandr Dodonov, and another romance is "Under the fragrant lilac branch" ("Under the fragrant siren branch").
Mykola Lysenko was among his students.
In 1874 he was appointed to the Vyatka District Court as an official, where he worked until 1885. Due to illness, in 1885 he was transferred to Taganrog.
