Tseglyar Yakov Samailovich

1912-2008

Yakiv Samiylovych Tsehlyar (real name - Ziegler) (* 29 February 1912 - 11 February 2008) was a Soviet and Ukrainian composer. Honoured Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1972). People's Artist of Ukraine (27.01.1993).
He was a Jew by birth. He was born and died in Kyiv. He graduated from the Kyiv Music College (1939), studied at the Kyiv Conservatory and graduated from the Tbilisi Conservatory (1946). He was a student of P. Kozytskyi and H. Verevka.

operettas - "We Wish You Happiness" (1957), "A Guest from Vienna" (1960), "The Girl and the Sea" (1965), "A Happy Turn of Fate" (1980),
musical comedies - "The Whole World and Even More" (1967), "The Retired Groom" (based on the work by H. Kvitka-Osnovyanenko, 1983), "Matchmaking on Honcharivka" (1983);
vocal and symphonic works
for voice and orchestra - the poem "The Poet's Love" (1962), the cantata "To the Immortal Kobzar" (1963, 2nd ed. 1972),
for colouratura soprano and orchestra. -"Concert Waltz" (1975), oratorio "Jewish Tragedy" (lyrics by M. Rylsky and Dmytro Pavlychko, 1991, opera version "These are my children", 1992);
for symphony orchestra - suites from his own operettas and musical comedies, waltz "Golden Lights" (1964), nocturne "Stars over the Dnipro" (1969), etc;
chamber instrumental works - suites: for string quartet (1944), "Strings of Friendship" for violin and orchestra;
for piano - 2 Preludes (1971), Variations;
