Boris Oleksandrovych Sklovsky

1909-1993

Borys Sklawskyi (born 1909) is a Ukrainian pianist and teacher.

He was born in Mykolaiv. He began to study music with his mother. In 1916, he held an audition in St. Petersburg, which was attended by music teachers Alexander Glazunov and Leonid Nikolaiev. He made such an impression with his playing that they decided to enrol him in the St Petersburg Conservatoire as an exception. But due to family circumstances, he returned home.

In autumn 1922, the family moved to Kharkiv and he entered the local music college. In 1929, he won first prize at the Republican Piano Competition.

He graduated from the Kharkiv Conservatory. Since 1933 he has been teaching there, and in the late 1950s he became a professor. At the same time, he performed at concerts and took part in competitions. Winner of the All-Union Piano Competition (1937).
