Batiuk Porfiriy Kirillovich

1884-1973

He received his musical education in St. Petersburg at the Smolensky School of Music (1894) and at the Court Special Chapel (with the title of conductor, teacher of singing and music theory). He also studied violin with P. Vilkomyrsky and voice training with V. Vlasov in Moscow.

In 1913, he returned to Ukraine and began his musical and pedagogical career. In 1913-1920 he was a singing teacher at the gymnasium in Zinkiv. He published "Musical Textbook for Schools" and a collection of school choirs "Red Holidays". In 1918, together with P. Tolstiakov, he founded a school for conductors of village choirs in Zinkiv.

In 1920-1926 he was a teacher of methodology at the Pedagogical Courses. In 1926-1933, he was a teacher of music theory and methods of school singing at the Pedagogical College in Okhtyrka, Kharkiv district. In 1933-1941, he was a choir director at the Architectural College in Kharkiv.

In 1944-1947, he was a senior researcher at the Institute of Art History, Folklore and Ethnography of the Ukrainian SSR Academy of Sciences.

In 1946-1948 he was the director of the choir of the Kyiv Party School.

He composed texts on Shevchenko for unaccompanied children's choirs "Testament," "It was my thirteenth year," "River" ("Water flows from under the sycamore tree"), all in 1922, a romance for high voice with piano accompaniment "In the grove, in the grove" (1962), mixed unaccompanied choirs "On the grave, on the high" and "Let the glory of you flow" (both to lyrics by K. Yatsyk, 1961). He is the author of the music to the famous song with lyrics by S. Cherkasenko "Quiet over the river".
