Pylyp Bassa (27 November 1889, Lysynychi village, now Pustomyty district, Lviv region - 23 November 1961, Montreal, Canada) was a Ukrainian actor, conductor, violinist, musicologist, and amateur singer. Husband of Olga Bassa.
Biography.
He was born on 27 November 1889, in the village of Lysynychi (Kingdom of Galicia and Volhynia, Austro-Hungarian Empire, now Pustomyty district, Lviv region, Ukraine).
In 1915-1917, he was an actor, choirmaster, and conductor of the Ternopil Theatre Evenings theatre.
From December 1918, he was a sergeant major in the UGA.
In 1920, he returned to Ternopil; he taught music and singing, led the choir and orchestra at the Ukrainian gymnasium; taught singing at the women's seminary; founded choirs in the villages of Velyki Hai and Shliakhtyntsi (now Ternopil district).
In 1929, he emigrated to Canada (Montreal). He organised choirs and orchestras, taught music at a French university and schools.
In 1943-1945, he was a brass bandmaster in the Canadian army. He studied the possibility of using music in medicine in the treatment of seriously ill patients.
He died on 23 November 1961 in Montreal.
